จักรวรรดิอิตาลี

จักรวรรดิอิตาลี (อังกฤษ: Italian Empire) ก่อตั้งขึ้นโดยราชอาณาจักรอิตาลี (อิตาลีสมัยใหม่ที่เกิดขึ้นจากการรวมชาติอิตาลี (Italian unification) ที่เพิ่งเริ่มก่อตั้งขึ้นในปี ค.ศ. 1861) โดยอิตาลีได้ร่วมมือกับมหาอำนาจอื่นๆ ในยุโรปใน “การล่าอาณานิคมในแอฟริกา” ในช่วงนี้จักรวรรดิโปรตุเกส, สเปน, เนเธอร์แลนด์, อังกฤษ และ ฝรั่งเศส ต่างก็เป็นเจ้าของอาณานิคมกันมาเป็นเวลาหลายร้อยปีแล้ว ดินแดนสุดท้ายที่ยังคงเหลือสำหรับยึดเป็นอาณานิคมคือทวีปแอฟริกาเท่านั้น

เมื่อสงครามโลกครั้งที่หนึ่งเริ่มขึ้นในปี ค.ศ. 1914 อิตาลีก็ผนวกเอริเทรีย และ โซมาเลีย และพยายามควบคุมบางส่วนของจักรวรรดิออตโตมัน รวมทั้งลิเบีย แต่ต้องพ่ายแพ้เมื่อพยายามยึดเอธิโอเปีย รัฐบาลฟาสซิสต์ภายใต้การนำของผู้เผด็จการเบนิโต มุสโสลินีพยายามขยายเขตแดนของจักรวรรดิเพิ่มขึ้น ทั้งโดยการใช้กำลังและโดยการขู่ว่าจะใช้กำลัง และในที่สุดก็ยึดเอธิโอเปียได้เมื่อสี่สิบปีให้หลังจากการพยายามครั้งแรก
